A previously working key can lose its programming and stop being recognized by the car. This happens for several reasons, and understanding the cause determines the fix.
Fob battery replacement. On some vehicles, removing the fob battery interrupts the transponder's memory retention. The key needs re-syncing with the immobilizer. This is the most common reprogramming reason.
Electrical system reset. If the car battery was disconnected, replaced, or died completely, some vehicles lose their key memory and require reprogramming.
ECU update or replacement. When the engine control unit receives a software update or is replaced, the key data may need to be re-registered.
Interference/corruption. Strong electromagnetic fields (parking near industrial equipment, leaving the fob near electronics) can occasionally corrupt the transponder's stored data.
Reprogramming re-establishes the connection between your existing key and the car. It is cheaper than replacement because no new key blank or cutting is needed - just the electronic pairing. Cost: $50-$150 for reprogramming alone.
Treasure Coast Locksmith troubleshoots and reprograms non-working keys at your Port St Lucie location. We diagnose whether the issue is the key, the car's immobilizer, or the battery, then apply the correct fix.
